When I bought my puppy home, I thought I had bought the perfect puppy. Then on the third day he got sick. It's been 11 going on 12 years of Vet visits and $$$ poured down the drain.

If you have a pet that's  unwell please take him or her to the vet for a checkup. But if your vet  tells you that your canine has skin or food dog allergies, then I encourage you to read on.

Here is my dogs' story.

West Highland White Terriers are known for having food allergies.

My dog Spooky has endured more visits to the vet because of allergies, than I can count, but he's worth it because he is a one in a million; he's the  greatest companion I have never found.

With vomiting blood, diarrhea and blood in his stools I visited  different vets every few months. Could this be dog food allergies  causing my Westie to vomit his food?

After $1200.00  dollars in examination, x-rays and drugs, they all told me that it was  probably a dog food allergy because they couldn't find anything wrong in the blood work or examination. They sent me home with a special diet of Duck and potatoes, Venison and potatoes and finally Salmon and  potatoes Nothing worked so they switched me to a hypoallergenic dog  food at an exorbitant price. Still my male dog would loose his appetite, refuse to eat and vomit bile.

I was at my wits end  so I finally went to see a vet in San Mateo who told me he had Colitis  along with food allergies. We kept him on the anti-allergy formula but  added bran to his diet. He improved and started eating more, gained  weight and looked happier.

Westies with food allergies like these are  all too common. We hope we can give you some hints on how to keep your  Westie or any other dog with food allergies in tip top form.

FOOD ALLERGIES

I did more research  on commercial dog food and was startled to learn just what is in most  all of the popular dog foods sold in markets and pet shops.

If you think your dog is suffering from food allergies, please read the article on the ingredients in commercial chow. It may surprise you that  there is so much junk in dog food. Most of our family pets are just  that, family. We wouldn't feed unhealthy food to one of our family. So  why do we buy into this multi-million dollar industry that produces  extruded, rancid grease encrusted meat by-products for our best  friends?  Hypoallergenic dog food

Most hypoallergenic  dog food that you buy from Veterinarians cannot be bought anywhere else  but at the vets.  Did you also know  that veterinarians mark up the dog food 40% to 50? Of course they are  going to encourage us to buy it when such an easy profit can be made.

Do I still buy that  dog food for my dogs?  Now I do have a choice. It takes time and  energy but I replace the vets food with wholesome food I cook at home.

Hopefully the  questions about commercial pet food I raise here on this site will cause you a moment to pause and decide if commercial dog food is what you  really want to feed your dog.

Let me also say that  if you have a sick dog the first thing you must do is visit the vet and  find out what is wrong. It could be something so serious that a change  in diet will not help. Be safe and sure and have your dog checked first.

We've all seen our dogs rubbing their faces on the carpet.  This is usually just your dog cleaning his face after eating or sometimes they need to get those hard pieces of eye junk off!

Crawling on carpet so that they can scratch their belly:

Now this is different from rubbing their faces on carpet.  Your pet is scratching his belly because he itches and dragging his or her belly on the carpet feels great.  The belly is hard to reach with paws or mouth so scratching by rubbing the belly on the carpet is just about the only way to scratch.

Now that you know why a dog does this, what can you do about it?

Turn your dog over and check for bites, bumps, or scabs and wash and apply medicine to the infected areas.

Dog food and our pets; when did it become so difficult to find a good diet when commercial pet chow is not trusted, especially if it has ingredients from overseas which could contain bacteria and pesticides and now Diamond Brands just announced another recall of their products, when does it end?

An allergy from dog chow can  turn a happy pup into a shadow of his former self, a sad canine with stomach problems - dealing with these problems may cost you more money in the long run but better than paying vet bills every month.

Food allergies are  common throughout the United States.  Don't give your dog pet food that will shorten his life.

If you knew the  ingredients in commercial dog food you wouldn't feed it to your dog, let alone your best friend.

Another thing I do is give my dogs Probiotics.  There are many on the market but I like to use a new product that are chews with peanut butter taste.

Now, are you ready for What's really in commercial pet chow?

The ugly truth about dog food manufacturers.
